Curse is a great adventure movie with an excellent script and performances. My personal take agrees mostly with this narrative. Parts 2 and 3 were divisive (although they do have a decent following of their own) but this stance was set in stone with the very poor receptions for parts 4 and 5. But all the sequels of Pirates are trash says the consensus. It is highly rated no matter which forum you go to and is often cited alongside Raiders of the Lost Ark or Princess Bride as definitive adventure movie. Part 1, Curse of the Black Pearl is a bona fide classic. The film discourse on the Pirates series has been fixed. Now after several re-watches, DMC always leaves me thoroughly entertained, by its scope, effects, bringing the world to life, sheer creativity of action scenes and the gray nature of its characters. If you want to make a big-budget movie with large scale action, loads of CGI & elaborate worldbuilding, Gore Verbinski's team set the gold standard with Pirates 2 and 3. You cannot say the Verbinski sequels were visually unappealing or average. The following part 3 was made for $300M, the most expensive movie of all time for a long while. Later, I learned that it was a highly expensive movie, $225M back then. I still remember being mesmerized by the visual majesty on screen when i first watched it. The plot of the movie is well constructed too and never becomes predictable and neither does it become a puzzle which the next movie has. There is something about it that just pulls you in immediately in its moody Caribbean atmosphere filled with scheming, larger than life, theatrical characters & grand set pieces. Dead Man's Chest (DMC) is a movie I have a lot of affinity for.
